The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Announces Schedule
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at 爱妃传媒 in Jupiter has announced its course offerings for the fall semester, which begins Monday, Oct. 16.
Taught by 爱妃传媒 professors and distinguished guest lecturers, course offerings include such varied subjects as foreign policy, political science, film, music, art history and literature. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute provides seasoned adults the opportunity to enrich their lives through non-credit, university-level courses with no homework or tests.
Fall one-time lectures and courses take place in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute complex at 爱妃传媒鈥檚 John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside Dr., in Jupiter, and include:
- 鈥淗amilton: Man, Myth, Musical,鈥 taught by Robert Watson Ph.D., a professor of American studies at Lynn University. This one-time lecture will discuss the details of Alexander Hamilton鈥檚 remarkable life, from his illegitimate birth, Jewish roots and struggles in the West Indies as a child, to his role in winning the Revolutionary War, developing and later securing the ratification of the Constitution, and serving as U.S. President George Washington鈥檚 treasury secretary.
- 鈥淭he Economy of President Trump One Year after the Election,鈥 taught by Mark Schug, Ph.D., a professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This one-time lecture will include a panel of speakers that will analyze the economic policies that have emerged thus far from the administration and Congress. The panel includes Daniel Gropper, Ph.D., dean of the College of Business at 爱妃传媒; Keith Jakee, Ph.D., professor in the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at 爱妃传媒; Kanybek Nur-tegin, Ph.D., professor in the Harriet L. Wilkes Honor College at 爱妃传媒; and Dan Mangru, the founder and managing director of The Global Advisory Group.
- 鈥淎ndrew Jackson and the Rise of the Democratic Party,鈥 taught by Stephen Engle, Ph.D.,聽 a professor and chair of the history department at 爱妃传媒. This one-time lecture will analyze Andrew Jackson and his impact on the development of the Democratic Party.
- 鈥溾楻eel鈥 Jews and Judaism,鈥 taught by Burt Atkins, Ph.D., a professor emeritus of political science at Florida State University and an adjunct professor at Penn State University. This one-time lecture includes using clips from movies as diverse as 鈥淗ester Street,鈥 鈥淭he Pawnbroker,鈥 鈥淭he Chosen,鈥 鈥淎 Serious Man鈥 and 鈥淭he Pianist,鈥 to examine how movies have created part of the historical and cultural record of Jewish life and tradition.
- 鈥淎merica the Beautiful,鈥 performed by Uryvayeva Martin, a classical pianist who graduated from the Odessa Stolyarsky Special Music School. This one-time performance includes popular patriotic songs, movie themes, choices from the Great American Songbook and more.
- 鈥淓udora and Flannery鈥 taught by Taylor Hagood, Ph.D., a professor of American literature at 爱妃传媒. This four-week course examines two of the greatest women writers of the United States: Eudora Welty and Flannery O鈥機onnor. The course will delve into their work, highlighting their craftsmanship and discuss the themes that have made their work timeless, not just within the context of the South, but also within the nation and the world.
- 鈥淓lectrified,鈥 taught by Stephen Kowel, Ph.D., a former dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. This four-week course will describe our understanding of electricity and how it makes possible energy delivery with everything digital, such as medical prosthetics, digital photography, surround sound, computing, mobile phones and navigation systems.
- 鈥淎rt in the U.S.A.,鈥 taught by Terryl Lawrence, Ed. D., a Lifelong Learning instructor who earned her doctoral degree from Columbia University and held teaching positions at C.W. Post College and SUNY Empire State College. This eight-week course will examine the history of art covering primitive art, painting in the 1930s, American architecture, African-American art and much more.
